Civil Introd. 6
are not clear the property nor ever have been the property
of those who have derived the sole advantage
of them, but of the state which has derived no
advantage from them any more than from the status
of the individuals – say this and the business is
done.
If this be not perfectly satisfactory of demonstration
itself would be company and contributory
to satisfaction and demonstration itself would be necessary to perfect
satisfaction, a few words more to make up the
argument into a syllogism or string of syllogisms, and the business
is done. Human feelings being altogether out
of the question, direct the view solely to confirm the view to words such as Justice and
Injustice. Where there is no property there is no
injustice: the estates in the hands of the Clergy are
not their property, therefore the taking them out of
their hands will be no injustice. It would take up
too much paper to put draw the argument out at length, and put it into exact
word and figure: but logicians will acknowledge
that nothing but form is wanting to make the argument
up into a demonstration of the closest notion.
Were you to Do not say then the estates in their hands shall no
longer be their property no longer, the it would then be
your doing that deprived them of it, and the responsibility
would might hang heavy on you: say they are not their
property – if they are it is not, there is no help for it, nothing more
to be said about it, and the responsibility shifts itself off upon the nature of things.
