Are there any other efficient causes of
happiness which have entitled to a place on a level with
the foregoing in the character of objects having a
claim to the alteration and endeavours of the law? – I answer It should
seem, none. Many other names words might be found
significative of objects whose title – the appellation
of blessings is indisputable not to be disputed, but which are either
not within the spheres of the activity of the law,
or which how much soever they contribute to the
mass of happiness, do so no otherwise than in virtue
[of the tendency they have to] of the relation to they
bear to one or other some of the blessings enumerated placed
in the first line i:e: in virtue of the tendency
which those blessings of the 2d order as they may be
termed have to operate as afforded causes of the
blessings of the first order already enumerated and
analysed.
