3 Compensation

of pain: which pain may be so great as to swallow up

If there be any in which a compensation
of the vindictive kind can be adequate, it is where
the author of the damage is one, and

adequate, if it be of it's [the See Jus. 3 Ill-will

Resentment selfish - social - of antipathy.
into the different sources from which resentment may arise.

Resentment or the state of mind which is apt
to produce an appetite for the enjoyment of anothers
pain may arise from either of three sources: 1st
from the notion of an injury a mischief done to him the person himself, who
harbours it: in this case it may be stiled
selfish resentment: of the selfish kind:+ 2dly from the notion of a mischief
+or resentment from
a selfish source

done to any person or [number] community of persons whose for
concerns interests are dear to him whom he has an affection: in this case it may
be stiled sympathetic: or 3dly from a dislike
or antipathy entertained against some point of the behaviour by in
another person which the resentment is existed, without either of the
above grounds, and therefore without any assignable foundation specific foundation
that can be assigned: this may be called [a]
