is disbursed: but in such small inequalities the difference
of sensibility is not worth attending to. Let
us ut a case then at once in which it will plainly
appear to be material. The fortunes of the parties
are
The fortunes of the parties are each £800
The damage is £400
The author of the damage has been already made to pay £200
The remaining the amount then of His fortune then is but £700 600
While that of the party dam his competitor is still 800
There remains to be paid by one or other of them 200
Now this £200 here is 1/3 of 600
Whereas it is but 1/4 of 800
The loss therefore of this same sum of £200
would now produce 4 degrees of pain
in the author of the damage, at the
same time that it would produce but
3 in his competitor.[a]
