Destined to find continue employment for such members of
the community as stand unhappliy distinguished by
their aversion from as well as their unacquaintancein a with
profitable labour productive industry, I have directed bent my exertions to
the superseding the necessity as well as good will dexterity as of
good will by the aid of mechanism assisting and in
some measure supersedingrespects taking the place of human labour, applied
principally to that branch of manufacture which consists of giving
shape to the wood, and some enclosures to metal
and other materials, fitting them for adapted to domestic and other
economical purposesuses, forming them into articles of household furniture
carriages, machines of various sorts, and other useful implements.
Pecuniary emolument, were that the sole or even principal
object, would certainly never have dictated this
address. Articles of the most more delicate and
artificial texture, such as the ornamental part cabinet-work and and wheel-
work, articles in which the materials are of the
most kindnature, and as in the execution of in which nicety of constructionnice workmanship is
best paid for, are those which call in preference for
machinery and in the working of which any endeavours
have already been crowned with such a degree of success as places the leaves no room for doubt uncertainty with regard to the demand
advantageousprofitable success prosecution of the business out of doubt.
But in this branch of contributing to the prosperity of manufacture I should only
be multiplying superfluities and bringing the luxuriance gratification enjoyments refinements
of a refined last of luxury more in their reach: whereas my first wish wouldbe
