General Idea.
A constant cause
of calefaction
whether lamp or
culinary fire,
constantly sufficient
to maintain
in the Tepidarium
(Whether
Air Chamber or
Balneum) a degree
of temperature
above the degree
required.
The function of
the Regulator
being to reduce
the temperature to
the degree required.
The heat, when
above the degree
required acting
on the Regulator
causes it to open
a Valve, which
lets out a part
of the air or water
of the Tepidarium
and lets in cold
air or water in
the room of it.
Regulating Valve.
1. The Valve a
flat plate, lying
upon an
aperture, and
closing it by its
weight.
A tube closed at the bottom containing
a fluidopen at top containing mercury
or water with a
cylindrical cork floating on
it. A wire stuck
through the cork
in the centre of
it, rises with
cork, and pushes
up the valve:
the heat causing
the fluid in the
tube to expand,
and the expansion
causing it to rise
and raise the cork
with it
2. The Valve

or in the axis of the

The valve may
be opened by the
wire rising against
it as above, or
by a lever, the
power of which
is increased by
an influx of

down and positioned to the bottom
of the tube: the
mercury or water
so if connected
resting on it. with the glass

the required
heat of the Tepidarium
to be
greater than the
greatest heat
of the atmosphere
in the country
(say 90.)
For lesser degrees
a Frigidarium
must be connected
with the Tepidarium
