Take for example the dictate of justice which is supposed
to say – fulfil your engagements. It has already
been shown that the from the rule of natural justice
if it be one, defalcations, and three of vast extent, must
be made on the authority of the principle of utility, or that
society must will every where go to wreck.

But moreover not only is this dictate of justice combated,
and with advantage overthrown over-rated as above, to
a great extent by the principle of utility, but when
attached, in so far as it is not over ruled, it is to the
same principle that it must look for its sole, its necessary
support.

A man ought to fulfil his engagements: in case of
failure the legislator and the Judge ought to compel him to fulfil his
engagements. Why? Because engagement is the foremost
of mutual service. In the performance of doing the one act whereby an
engagement entered into by me with you and in your favour
has been fulfilled, I can render you a correspondent
service. Labour performed for the benefit of another is sooner
rendered to him. If no engagements were fulfilled as engagements
could be entered into, no labour (in any proportion
worth regarding as the view) done by any one man for any
other: of the mass of wealth at present existing in any
country, all that which owes its birth to labour done by
one man for the benefit of another in virtue of a mutual
engagement entered into between them for that purpose, would be to be in future
defalcated cast off.
