Defence or Preface for Fragment

The Truth is that between for amongst to abuses of all sorts, as there
is a common root, so is there a common bond support of connection.
Whoever derives from abuse in any shape any the smallest
profit beholds a partner and supporter in every other man
who derives a profit from abuse in any other shape.
By Not that by any one man of them in the breast of so much as a single member of the firm any such wish is
entertained as that the country should be swallowed up either
by the or by Bonaparte: all that is desired is that
whatsoever quantity of profitable abuse exists and all every
thing that is bad in government is directly or indirectly
abuse is in one way or other profitable may be extended increased
or at least preserved to whatever extent is not inconsistent with so fatal any such extensively fatal a catastrophe.

If to William Rufus any such design or even wish
was by any man imputed as that of seeing the whole island
sunk or overflowed swallowed up, or even drowned the whole even so much as the
greater part of it laid waste, that man may without fear of
injustice be set down as either a simpleton or a calumniator.
It was the interest of the loyal sportsmen man that were the greater part of the
country should remain in some sort of cultivation, lest there food should
not be food sufficient for the maintenance of the men be wanting for the number of men
necessary for his subsistence and defence, which occupied in amusing running after stags pursuing his pleasure the pursuit of
stags and foxes
himself in those parts of it which for that purpose had been
had been brought unproved by him into a state of waste: accordingly
it was but the smaller part of the country that became received
this sort of improvement at his hands.
in that form the theatre of his pleasures.
