1821 June 2
To Carvaho

Not long ago At our first interview I believe it was
with Dr Roden, he dropt something dropped from him
about a proposed correspondence on my part with some public
man or other at Lisbon, mentioning, I believe, though
without designation of names, some Member or other of the Cortes.
The tendency of my answer was rather I believe rather
declinatory: not but that, were I supposing myself sufficiently at liberty
it would be perhaps the most interesting correspondence
I could have, but that, the correspondence between Lisbon
and London being already in his hands, it did not
appear to be me how at on this side of the water it could
be on any better. By the further acceptance made with
his habits I have been led to look at the matter as above, this notion has undergone the a correspondent alternation which with
in a different point of view: I do can you are proposed for I rendered any further insist on
not lost upon as among the most conspicuous of hesitance.
I wish this therefore to say, Sir, that, not liking
the thought of depriving your country of any possession so even supposing it practicable in my power,
valuable be it as your time, of any portion of a time such as yours if it be agreeable to you
to pitch upon some other person near you whose sentiments I
might look upon as yours, and to say so to me accordingly
it would be a real pleasure to me to receive
his your commands through him and pay obedience to them in
every thing in my power: always on the supposition
that the correspondence had for its object some determinate
practical measures on the occasion of which I
may might entertain a hope of rendering my services useful
to your country as some Portugal, in this or that determinate shape.
