Now as to justice in the sense in
which the word is employed in the sort of
case called a penal case. In a penal
case existence and employment so supposed to be purposely
given to a portion of the matter of evil: and
if the greatest happiness principle be the ruling
principle, it is always with the view and
for the purpose of putting an exclusion
upon a mass of evil in greater quantity and
value or what comes to the same thing the
existence to a preponderant portion
of the matter of good. This being the case
only in the character of a remedy or as above
what is equivalent to a remedy, is evil under
the name under the name of punishment
ever applied? But punishment or say the
is but one of four distinguishable specs sorts
of remedies by which the supposed evil of a
species of act regarded as maleficent is capable
of being combated: these are 1. the preventive
2. the suppressive 3, the satisfactive
4. the punitive, or say subsequentially-
preventive: order of time 1st the preventive
then in so far as that has failed of its
effect 2ndly the suppressive 3rdly the
satisfactive and subsequentially preventive,
for these two last are capable of being
applied at the same moment of time—
