So in the case of love of liberty.
By love of liberty, two very different affections are
denoted, according to the person whose liberty is
in question. Is it the lover himself? If yes, love
of liberty is so far love of power — of power over
his own actions and his own feelings Is it
in this case, the affection is a self regarding one.
is it a person other than that same lover,
or an assemblage of any such persons, small
or large, assignable or unassignable, it is then
a modification of sympathy for the happiness
of those same persons. In this case, the affection
is of the extra regarding, and therein of the
violent kind.
to this same erroneous propensity
it should seen that language is inabled
for the term moral sense — a term which constituted
the basis of which is expressed by the words
greatest happiness principle.
if practice be admitted in the character
of an independent object of love,where
shall we stop — what limit can there be to
the number of the objects? To Justice must
we not also in like manner equity-right
reason-legitimacy and so on. The catalogue
of these supposed inate and
objects of love, may not be various in the
languages some all of them — may
it not in a word, vary with the language?
