Dr Hales (as related by Mr Foster who was witness to several of
the Experiments) (and qu. whether it is not in the Veg. Statics) cut off
Twigs of Peach Trees with fruit on them, reconnected the twig with the
parent tree by the interposition of Glass Tubes in one of which
was inserted the branch from which the twig was cut off, and in
the other the wounded end of the twig — the Glasses Tube was exactly
closed [Qu. with what? Clay for instance or pitch] to the branch and
amputated twig, so however as to have an interval of some Inches
between these last — the circulation appear'd to be carried on as
before — the fruit on the twig ripened — this seems to shew
that the fluids circulate in the state of vaper — at least they must
have done so in this instance — It should seem further that, here
being no longer any juxta-position, the fitting of the several cells
in the Stock and the Twig would not be necessary — hence a hint
is furnished for the extension of this Experiment to to a Twig
cut off from at a different branch of the same individual Stock
2dly one of a Stock of the same species 3dly of the same Genus
4thly of any other Plant whatsoever — at least of any other of the
similar consistence and degree of succulence. In either
event, of success or miscarriage the Theoretical consequences will be very important
I must at present postpone them as an subjects of future
consideration — in case of success the practical one may be this.
