All language that concerns the operation of the
mind is metaphorical (D'Alembert) Nothing therefore
can be said of any operations of the mind
but by words exhibiting some material image.
Elegance therefore if not clearness perspicuity of expression will
depend upon avoiding incongruity with respect
to these material images. Mix not incongrous images
in the same sentence. The images may
very well be changed: they must be: the analogy
between the material type & the intellectual
object typified can never continue long.
