Authenticity
Rules

1. Not to copy or
abridge any article
whatever whether article
of intelligence,
observation-
paragraph, or
issue, without reference
to the source.

2. Where an article
appears in the first
instancein more
newspapers or other
publications than
one refer to all
the sources.

Uses

1. To give genuine
information accompanied
with the
degree of credit that
is due to it.

2. To repel the imputation
of libellous
intentions.

3. To indicate, and
then obtain credit
for such of the intelligence &c as is
really original

4. To shew the reader
that the cream of
the other publications
as concerned, and
that this one paper
may stand him
instead of all the
rest

Authenticity
Authenticity
Universality

In Papers of great
Authenticity, such
as the Leyden
Gazette,

After the articles
copied or abridged
give a list of
those omitted.

---page break---

Impartiality
Rules

1. Not to admitt
any article in
disparagement of
any person without
admitting an
article (if offered)
in defence.

2 If several are
offered, then to be
careful to select
the best, giving
notice of those
omitted.

3. To be very sparing
of general
unfounded elogium

4. To give no
unfounded censure
i:e: without reference
to some
specific matter of
fact, some individual
article of
conduct on which
it is grounded.

Let the censure or
approbation rise out
of the facts: or what
in general will be
still better, state the
facts, and leave it to
the reader to draw
the inference.

Impartiality

The richer the paper
is in intelligence, the
less it will stand in
need of observation
paragraphs, which
at best are only accepted
as apologies
for want of news.
