Mr Edw. Poore to Rev.d Jos.h Townshend Feb. 25 1788 Weddington
near Devises
Manufacturers of Wool in Urchfont Parish where he lives
To employ the poor at the dead Season, af as also those already in
the Parish. The Overseers bought rough wool & oil & employ'd a
person to mix it properly. Then deliverd it to the poor to spin
it into the several uses for the Manufacturer, paid them so much
pr Pound & sent it to Malmsbury and Tedbury markets to
vend it. But the consequence was that the Clothiers in the
neighbourhood of Devises Calne &c who used to put out their
spinning in the Parish before, entered into a combination &
withdraw their former work (a) - And the Parish officers were not able
to sell the Yarn & c at the Markets for near so much as the prime
cost of Wool, Oil & Labour stood them....& the Poor would have
quickly lost the usual employment from the neighbouring towns
(a) Reason pr Mr G.d They were afraid that if the poor got new
employers the price of their labour would be raised upon the old ones.
