I make choise of a Master & Mistress that has no Family for the
Work
The Master Appointed by the Gen Overseer. As he is to be Accountable
for his conduct certainly ought to have the appointment of the Person
who is to Superintend the Workhouse. Unless you do this you do nothing.
When Appointed his Salary is 10 pound P Annum & 2 Pence out of
every Shilling that is earnt ed in the Workhouse
The Rules to be Observd by him are as follows
1st The House to be washd every Week Swept every Morng Sprinkled
with Vinegar & Bitter Herbs twice or thrice a Week in Hot
weather to prevent disorder Fevers &c &c
2nd
No Person admitted without a Note From the Overseer
or in his Absence, the Churchwarden. When Admitted to
Observe the Rules following
Every Person in the 3rd Workhouse are Oblidgd to wash
themselves before they Breakfast and when they have finshd their
days work. Their Statute Labour is Appointed by the Master
According to their Age & ability, all above w'ch they have for
themselves to encourage them in their Labour NB we do not
harm them
4th
If any Person Curse or Swere we do not put the County to expence
by sending them to Prison: they only continue without their
Animal Food for 16 days, the same Punishment for
Drunkeness ---
5th
If any refuse to Labour, if able (our Apothecary being Judge)
they have Only Bread & Water, or are turnd out of the House —
this good Rule (as I suffer no stroke to be given the tender
hearted Lord W. Seymour endeavoured to break through
6th
If any Pauper Steal whether in or out of the Workhouse instead of
sending them to Prison, where they learn to Practice all kind of
