Millet is at present imported
at a high price. It
will ripen in the open
field.

Maize is cultivated in parts
of Germany where the climate
is colder than that of England
It is always said to be a
very productive crop. A
permanent variety which
does not exceed four or five
feet in height is believed
the hardiest, as also that
it succeeds best when sowed
in autumn.

Medicago varia is said
to be a constant green crop
however poor & dry the
soil it is sowed upon.

Might not grasses be
improved as other vegetables
by selecting the
finest plants for seed?
These would require either
to be planted immediately
at a distance from less
promising plants. Seed
from these should be sowed,
the best roots again transplanted
continuing untill
no farther improvement
took place.

An apple to be procured at
Riga might be cultivated for
its beauty & singularity. The
seeds are visible from the
outside, the pulp approaches
so near transparency.

Black raspberry, rubus
occidentalis; not so high flavored
as the red, but valuable
because it ripens in
September.

Convolvulus batatas, the root perfectly
resembles the chesnut
in flavor; perhaps might
be cultivated here. It would
be a desirable acquisition
for winter deserts. Some
grocers occasionally import
a few of the roots from
Spain, & sell them at 18d.
a pound.

Crocus roots eaten for
chesnuts at Aleppo. Are
they good?

Would the large tailed Syrian
sheep live in this climate?
Fatted with care they sometimes
weigh 150 lb of which the tail is
a third, & resembles marrow.
At Aleppo this fat is substituted
in cookery for butter.
