April 3rd: 1795 Large Still at St Thomas's Hospital First Experim-
Still charged with 82 gallons of water — fire lighted
at twenty minutes past 6 oClock — live coals 5lbs/2 —
began to work at 1/2 past 7 oClock — consumed 40 lbs
of coals to make it work — at 1/2 past 10 forty two
gallons of water were added — 80 gallons of water
were drawn off by 3 oClock — consumed from the
time it began to work till the 80 gallons were
drawn off, of coals, 154 lbs, remained in the still
44 Gallons of water — 6 Gallons of water were
distilled in rather less than 40 minutes —
Small Still
March 7th 1796 -
Charged with 41 Gallons of water — fire lighted at 7
oClock — live coals 4 lbs — began to work at 8 oClock —
consumed 18 1/2 lbs of Coals to make it work — at 1/4
before 10 oClock 9 Gallons of water were added — at 1/4
past 11 oClock 9 Gallons of water were added — at 1/2
past 1 oClock 9 Gallons more water were added
40 gallons of water were drawn off by 2 oClock —
consumed 87 1/2 lbs of Coals from the time it began
to work till the 40 Gallons came off — at 9 minutes
past two oClock added 6 Gallons of water — the distillation
was continued till 5 gallons were drawn
off which was compleated at 10 minutes past 3 oClock
in continuing the distilling from 40 to 50 Gallons consumed
14 1/2 lbs of coals — remained in the Still 21 Gallons
of water — 6 gallons of water came over in forty one
minutes —
