Board the Fortune and Lion Hulks and 3 Hospital Ships in Langston and Portsmouth Harbours
for the Year 1797 also of the average number on Board & the Nature of their Employment during that period.

Expence of Maintaining, Clothing, and Guarding the Convicts at Langston and
Portsmouth Harbours for the Year 1797 including Medical assistance - - £19,721| 19| 10 1/4
Contingent charges viz. Salaries to Chaplains Inquests on deceased Convicts
Bounties & Clothing to such as were discharged at the expiration of their Sentences

The average number of Convicts on Board the Hulks in Langston and Portsmouth
Harbours during the Year 1797 - was - - - - 894

The Convicts confined on Board the Hulks in Langston Harbour were employed in making
Bricks hewing Stones wheeling Mud and Gravel, and various other works under the direction of the
Engineers appointed to superintend the Fortifications at Cumberland Fort.

Those confined on Board the Hulk at Portsmouth Harbour were employed in removing Mud &
Gravel raisining Sloping and preparing Glacis on Weevil Lines near Gosport and other occasional Works
under the Direction of the Engineers appointed to Superintend the Fortifications of that place.
