of just this sort is the reasoning of Dr Paley: and of the
public, that is of the portion thinking part or that which might
be to the thinking part of it, the very minute portion by to
which matters of this nature sort appear worth a thought,
the reasoning on this subject how much it were to be wished, would not
be - it is feared — is not of a superior stamp a stamp much superior to that
of Dr Paley.

In England human sacrifices are in use fashion in on
this shape ground. In Mexico, the like human sacrifices were in
use fashion on a ground somewhat different and but much narrower.
In England "public compassion" at least the compassion of public men has never yet
found any difficulty in enduring human sacrifices
in the English taste: in Mexico it f appears not to
have found any greater difficulty in ordinary human
sacrifices, in the Mexican state taste. If in the University
of Mexico it had been was the fashion to read lectures,
the reverend Doctors teachers of the religion of would
have found as little difficulty in presuming the necessity of the exact number of such sacrifices made in <add>the empire of Mexico</add> as the Reverend Tutor
of I forget what college in Cambridge did, in proving the
necessity of the exact number made in England: and with
a slight accomodation to to such circumstances of a local nature, his same
arguments might have been served.

The Mexic Mexican sacrifices made in the Mexican stile
being no longer in fashion are no longer justified. But when
the religion which was prescribed supposed to prescribe warrant them was destroyed,
it was destroyed not by reason - but by a relgion which,
in that instance as in so many others, proved still more destructive.
