Paley For the King to have it in his power to punish
the species of crimes in the manner <add>mode in question</add> in question in that proportionate
number of instances in which it is proper they should
be punished in that mode, viz. in one instance
only out of two instances in which a man is convicted
of having committed a crime of that species, it
is necessary according to the Reverend Doctor's
conception of the matter theory that the sum thing in his legislative capacity
should undertake to have undertaken to punish them in that same
mode in all his instances without exception: or
at any rate without any other exception than what
might would have taken place had the prerogative of
pardon been exercised upon men simple principles
and without any such du refund and secret policy
the pursuit adoption and pursuit of which is here
supposed. Such is the argument to which, after
awakening from his nod the Reverend Doctor apologist at
the close of this his paragraph returns, and with
which he finishes.
