According to the principle of utility not
an atom of pain in any shape would be
inflicted on any sentient being but under
the supposition and persuasion of its necessity;
viz the necessity of such infliction to the
preserving of the same individual or some
other individual or individuals from some
greater evil.
Under the principle of or
antipathy?vengeance pain to any amount may with
propriety be inflicted for no other cause
than the ill will excited in the breast of
another individual by the contemplation
of it;
and as this ill will is regarded as the sufficient
warrant or justifying cause for the
infliction of this pain so of the quantity of pain
proper in such case to be inflicted, the
