habitually added, every thing would
still be as it should be. There are out of ten
nine made to suffer death, therefore they
merited it they deserved it. By appointment
of the powers that be the nine others not
made to suffer death now, therefore they
"merit", they "deserve" it. If on so melancholy
an occasion it be proper that somebody
should be lamented, be it so, but let that
somebody be not the criminal by whose
wickedness the obligation of executing upon him
this so well merited and well deserved punishment
was imposed but the most gracious
and religious King on whom by his justice
an obligation so painful to his mercy was
imposed.
