paraphrase substituting to an indeterminate
and unintelligible clause that which
presents itself as the nearest intelligible
one. On the part of any one, who has in
contemplation the commission of any
enormous crime, there exists not (let us
say any such knowledge of the absence
of all provision made for its punishment,
as will cause him to adventure
upon the commission of it. In this
sense insipid and trifling as the proposition
is it cannot be charged
with being untrue; but in the character
of an argument in favour of the system of
punishment of the excellency of which it
is employed to half persuade so what
does it amount to? Exactly as it would
apply and with the same force in justification
of any other system of punishment
which happened to stand annexed to
the offences here in question -any punishment,
- no matter what - so it were
but
