The Stuart Kings were not, any of
them, very fond of hearing either in the
shape of a sermon or any other shape any
discourse involving in it any such supposition
as that power of any kind while
resting in their hands could be susceptible
of abuse. Yet a man might have
ventured for the least patient of them

have been sufficient to reconcile him to

strain once a week "or if need be oftener"
reserving to the Royal Hearer the faculty
which seems to have been exercised by
