folly and for all this wickedness, and
that as well where life was not at stake
as where it was, this pretended tenderness
of life served them for a pretence.

Here has been seen a sermon exactly
in the style of D.r Paley, without any
difference unless it be that of a still
stronger demonstration of being in earnest.
In design — but away with the enquiry —
it is neither capable of being ascertained
nor worth the ascertaining it — in tendency,
what? to renew the mischief? No: but
to confirm and aggravate it.

This it does in several ways
1. It tends to create preserve and
confirm in the minds of the unlearned
and among the legislature at large
the notion that whatever mischief has
place, results not from the introduction
of a principle radically vitious and
flagitious, but from the unguarded
application and over extension of a
principle in itself rational and favorable
to justice — as if a Physician of the body
