case" i.e. as security at all for
either "impartiality or attention" — but
on the part of the official person, who
to rid himself of the plague of "solicitation",
or to manifest or reward "friendship"
or conciliate or gratify a "political
attachment" — or to secure a vote or to
put money in his own pocket or that
of a relation — secures a pardon for
an offender in a preeminent and notorious
degree formidable in guilt —
on the part of this official person if
unfortunately pressed with any such
question as how came you to do so
a grave and solemn assurance
with eyes lifted up to heaven and
this sermon of the Reverend Doctor in
his hand that he had taken in all
things the severe and expressive lesson
given in it for his guide and that accordingly
