But, says somebody, why thus
indiscriminately and vehemently and
implacably censorial: the alternative
has but two branches - in obedience
or in disobedience to the law, - one
or other cannot but be embraced; and
let a man embrace which he will he stakes
himself upon your censure. Here according
to you are two joint evils one or other of
which can not but be produced : tell us
then - if you mean well - if you aim at any
thing better than the wretched pleasure of
giving vent to illwill tell us which in your
estimate is the least. Of the two opposite-
courses which - if you yourself being in
one of the stations were obliged to act in it
which is the course you would pursue.
My answer is - in respect of what is
thus done - so far from being levelled at any
man, my reason is not pointed at any one.
What I should do were it my misfortune
to find myself in either station that of Judge
or that of Juryman it is needless to inquire.
