As to vices, follies and passions
folly there was none (nothing that could
come fairly under that name) on either
side. Vices and passions the same on the
one and on the other bench — in kind the
same as every Lawyer brings with him
and leaves behind him in any Bench
situate lying and being in the Great
Hall.
The course taken for the display of his
power was to do a little good in a bad
way — in such a way as to countervail the
good — raise up mischief enough to
outweigh it. Except so much as could
or could not but be done by deciding
on the popular side which the interest
of his reputation and his Politics engaged
him to espouse it was the determination
taken by the Chief Justice of the
Bench never in the shape of Amendment
