Oil should be applied from time to time to the parts
liable to friction. The Leather should always be kept
strained out and a little tallow rubbed on it from
time to time if the scraper does not pass freely.
A very smooth surface will be obtained in this way
and the friction of the scraper lessened, Lard or
other greasy substances have not been found to answer
so well.
Preparing or Cleaning the Stones.
It would be found necessary in all cases to use Sand
either fine or coarse according to the depth the Writing
may have sunk into the Stone After the Stone has been
Sanded, a strong solution of Nitric Acid and Water
