1819 May 19

1. Morn. Chronicle 19 May 1819. 18 May Tierney on his motion
for a Committee on the State of the Nation.
"He did not mean that any administration should yield to the clamour
"of seditious agitators, or accede to the wild visionary projects of reform. "To such projects he declared that he was quite as adverse as the Rt.
"Hon. Gent. on the opposite side (Mr. Canning). But he was not
"therefore opposed to all reform. On the contrary, indeed, there were
"propositions of reform which he was cordially prepared to support, and
"which he thought ought to be adopted with a view to satisfy the people
"and to save the Constitution.

Westmr Election
Ib. Tierney's Reply. "At the late Westminster Election, both parties had
"supposed one Candidate" (Lamb).

Influence
Ib. 98 (the Opposition of the day) had the influence of the Church
"and the influence of the Crown against it – but he would say – Give us
"in the same means of influence popularity, and you shall not keep offer
"for a week."

Attendance.
Ib. "The superior zeal and vigilant attention to Parliamentary affairs
"which distinguished those by whom he (Mr. T.) was surrounded,
"caused them to sacrifice much of their private convenience to
"their public duty while on the other side the most extraordinary exertions,
"and whipping in was necessary to get any thing like a division.
"This was the reason why there was a weak ministry, and a strong "opposition" (head.).

Parl. Reform
Ib. "But it was a very different thing to be divided on Parliamentary
"Reform, a question on which there were so many shades
"of difference, and Catholic Emancipation, on which there was but
"one alternative – concession or no concession."
