Morning Chron. Oct. 30th, 1819 –
Extract from.
"How different the effect of the same occurrences
"in different situations. The dissensions between the radicals
"of the Metropolis are not noticed, or noticed only to be
"despised. The breaking of Hunt's Bush is laughed at,
"and the atrocity of the personal charges which he and his
"rival leaders fling in each other's faces, excite only disgust.
"But, suppose for a moment, that Radical Reform had
"taken place; the champions would, of course, be great
"popular Commoners, each having at his heels, and in
"the gallery of St. Stephen's perhaps, an escort of his Constituents,
"now "the unrepresented" – what would then be
"the consequence of such a feud as that now between
"them? The Consequence would be terror and Massacre
"– bands of the popular cutting each other's throats,
"and the threats of peaceful Citizens, all in the name
"of liberty".
Morning Chron – same date. Oct. 30th 1819.
Extract from –
In answer to Radicalists' Chairman,
Lord Cloncurry says – "Your Bedfords, your Fitzwilliams,
"your Hollands, your Burdetts, your Bennetts,
"your Cokes, and your Vernons, though many of those
"illustrious men do not go the full length of Annual
"Parliaments and Universal Suffrage, which I
"think the safest, as well as the most fitting
"reform for this age and these Countries, still they
"will join in such measures as will save the Country
"from absolute despotism, and the people from that
"Eastern extravagance, and that Military execution,
"with which they are threatened".
22 Nov. 1819. Morn Chron Editor
"That they have been deluded into senseless schemes of
"Reform, which, if realized, would plunge us into anarchy
"and ruin, is true – but there is no terror in their declamation.
"They would return to reason, and to practical plans of amelioration,
"if they saw a thoroughly united band of patriots agreed in the
"adoption of a Scheme for the Reform of Parliament, upon the principles
on which Representation shall provide for all the classes of the community, without giving to any one of them, the agricultural, the manufacturing or the moneyed interests such an ascendant as should overwhelm the others".
