Extract from –
Hanover Oct. 23d.
"In consequence of the Resolutions of the German
"Diet, in the sittings of 30th Septr., an Ordinance
"has been issued by Command of his
"Royal Highness the Prince Regent, enforcing anew
"the Edict respecting the Censorship of the Press,
"issued on the 6th of May 1705, by the Elector George
"Lewis, Duke of Brunswick, (afterwards King George
"the first) and renewed by a Decree of King George
"the II dated 31st of May 1731. By the Edict,
"no Hanoverian subject shall print any thing
"either in or out of the Country, and no Bookseller,
"either native or foreigner, shall take upon himself
"to print any thing in the Hanoverian Dominions,
"unless it has been previously submitted
"to the Censorship; and it is ordered that no writing
"shall be printed, nor if printed in any other
"part of Germany shall be put into circulation,
"which is not provided with the name of the publisher,
"and if it is of the class of newspaper, or periodical
"Journals, also with that of the Editor,
"under a penalty of 50 rix dollars. Publications in
"which this regulation is not observed, are to be
"seized as soon as they appear, and the distributors
"of them to be punished according to circumstances,
"by fine or imprisonment."
