There is no salvation for this country, but to return
as fast as we can to the ancient courses which we have abandoned.

step the people will be driven from one excess to another, to
lengths which we cannot think of without shuddering.
Force will never supply the place of justice. Punishment, to
be efficacious, must be accompanied by a feeling of its justice.
The executions in Scotland in the reign of Charles the Second
and James the Second, did not tend to stop the progress of
the contagion, but to increase it. Every farewell address of
the sufferers added to those the number of those who shared
their opinions.
