"At length the young gentlemen arrived ad montem;
"about a dozen fine boys, in Highland dresses, ascended the hill
"of Salt, and there formed themselves into a guard for the reception
"of their officer. The Ensign then made his appearance
"on the top of the mount, and furled his flag for near a
"quarter of an hour with admirable effect. His efforts were
"crowned with loud applauses from the surrounding multitude,
"in the midst of which we observed his Royal Highness
"the Duke of Success, the Earl of Pomfret, Lor Erskine, and several
"other persons of distinction. The flag was then placed
"on the hill where it kept flying during the whole afternoon;
"and the young gentlemen sat down to a dinner which had
"been prepared for them at the Great Inn, which has been the
"usual place of dining on all similar occasions.
