Collectanea
Traveller. Novr 3d 1821
"New York, Oct. 9.

"From Chili and Peru.—The last accounts from Lima were
received by his Majesty's frigate Owen Glendower arrived at
Valparaiso in 10 days from Lima; she left in Callao the United
States frigate Constellation. The armistice concluded in
May last, still continued, & it was confidently asserted that Lima
could not possibly hold out a month longer. Sir Thomas
Hardy had continued the blockade, to the ports from to
& ordered the release of all English vessels then in port.—
Chili itself begins to exhibit some symptoms of disagreable
nature.—In March last a paper appeared, under the title of
the pointing out the want of a Code of Laws: as
also begging of the Director a convocation of the Congress, which
he had promised in December. The author was immediately
put into prison: in the course of 9 months afterwards the
public were surprised by the arrest of Genl , & 2 of
the Officers of his Guard of Honour. The Governor of Chili
transmitted most of his State prisoners & some criminals
to the island of Juan Fernandez where they intended
planting a colony."
