Collectanea. U. S.
Pennsylvania.
Traveller Jan. 30th. 1822.
"Charleston papers have been received this morning to the
28th Decr & letters to the 1st Jany from which we copy the following:—
Pennsyvania—
The Legislature of this State are now in Session. His Excellency
the Governor congratulates the Members on the abundant
harvest, & on the prosperity of the manufactures—
He states that 577,259 dollars have been disbursed for public
improvement. Bridges have been erected nearly 2,000
miles of turnpike road haven been completed. He
speaks in flattering terms of the union canal, that a
spirit in favour of domestic manufactures was so prevalent
that the State would soon furnish an ample supply
of cotton, iron, glass, leather, not only sufficient for
home consumption, but for articles of export: the receipts of
the Treasury for the last years exceeds the preceding one
by 45,000 dollars. Referring to the improvements made in
the system of school education, he states that in the schools
in the city & county of Philladelphia, alone, 5369 schools
are instructed on the Lancasterian system. The resolutions
of Maryland with regard to public lands, are submitted to the
consideration of the Legislature. A new military system seems
particularly recommended by accepting the service of volunteer
companies commissions have already issued for 172 companies
thus formed."
