..... "It is perfectly natural that a set of men
"like the English Ministry; the Maddeners of Ireland;
"the projectors of Copenhagen and the Walcheren Expeditions;
"the plighted enemies of the most moderate reform;
"the plotters of obscene treason against the life of their
"Queen; the authors of the Manchester Massacre; the
"participators in the dismemberment of Saxons; the
"betrayors of Genoa, Naples and Parga; and the oppressors
"of the Ionian Islands; men intellectually imbecile,
"and politically wicked; whose actions can not be recorded
"without inspiring hatred, nor their talents
"investigated without exciting contempt; it is quite natural
" that such Statesmen should be enemies to free discussion,
"and endeavour to secure future power by stifling
"all scrutiny into its past abuse. Nor is it wonderful
"that the continental swindlers – the violaters of charters
"– the Usurpers of Italy – the withholders of promised
"Constitutions – who can not be reminded of an oath
"without being convicted of a perjury, and who want
"to drag their people backwards, as Cacus did the herds of
"Hercules, into the den of ignorance and superstition,
"should wish to silence that voice which can never convey
"more bitter reproaches than when it confines
"itself to a simple exposition of the truth, and calmly
"contrasts their professions with their practise, flaunted
"with the consciousness of their misdeeds, they see insurrection
"in every claim of right, and sedition in every
"paragraph, which is the sole secret and mystery of
"the prevailing cabinet cry against the disaffection
"of subjects and the licentiousness of the Press.
