Collectanea France
(2.)
"And what is their prospect of success from coercion?
"Can they enslave the Press more effectually than was
"done in Spain and Portugal? Journalists are too practised
"and dextrous now a days, to be easily disarmed.
"Like Tyrrell, they may contrive to wound a thing, while
"innocently aiming at a stag or a tree. So far from discontinuing
"the attack, because they can not fire point-blank,
"they will launch from mines and masqued
"batteries a safe volley of banter, inuendo, irony, fable,
"and apologue, which will wound the more deeply
"from being pointed by wit. They will learn to play
"at political bowls, and will hit the back by avoiding
"a direct aim.
"So much for the practicability of the attempt.
"One word upon its wisdom. By stopping the popular
"safety-valves, and at the same time stirring up the
"coals under the national boiler, a great accession of
"power may be momentarily obtained, but its duration
"will be as short as the final explosion will
"be terrific. This experiment has been tried in
"France, and if the Holy Alliance wish to repeat
"it, I do'nt know that their enemies can do a better
"thing than to stand aloof, and suffer them to pursue
"their pastime to its inevitable catastrophe."
