the fire of the eloquence of youth – that his Lord Byron's devotion & his
sacrifices to that cause threw a splendor bright as his own success
upon the his latter days of Lord Byron – that the sound sterling intelligence
& the strong sympathies with which Mr David Ricardo instructed &
ameliorated all those about it him were greatly excited in the behalf of
Greece, – & that the straight forward honest zeal with which Genl. Long
devoted himself to the service of that country & the frankness & readiness
with which he communicated all his military knowledge to its
service
for its assistance endeared him to his Philhellenic associates. In the
melancholy & miserable exposures which to which the late discussions on
the subject of Greece have bid have led the Greek Committee has come in for
a large portion of public censure – but we expect hope to show – nay, to
demonstrate – 1. that after a thorough examination of the matter, that
the conduct of the Greek Committee throughout was marked by
consideration prudence & wisdom – that in every instance they sought a
proper end & employed proper instruments , – & that they were
thwarted, when thwarted, by circumstances wholly beyond their
calculation & their control. It will appear that of all the evils
which have menaced, or afflicted Greece were foreseen & as far as
possible provided against by the Greek Committee, – & if it be
borne in mind that the Committee had only the power to recommend
but never to enforce a recommendation – that they were counsellors
possessed only of the authority which those they had to counsel
chose to allow – that they had no influence beyond the influence which
