produced a favorable impression, – but that impression was gradually
weakened – and the contending factions were as long involved in new

Fright It is necessary in order to for the right understanding of the real state
of each affair to relinquish the different parties & to watch observe
in what respects their interests were opposed to the common interests
of Greece. So unfortunately from the very commencement of the
struggle the government has always either been in the hands of one or
other of the contending factions, – or has grown out of an insincere
& coalition between them, in which one set of men in power have been
instantly engaged in subverting intriguingly against another, – it will be seen
how the selfish & sinister interests of every party have been in their turn
the principal spring of all the misfortunes in Greece. While the
Government was in the hands of the military</del

improved system of military tactics were opposed by the guerilla chiefs – the Capitan:
who felt their own influence depended on the oppression of a
regular soldiery. The primates who had been thoroughly corrupted
by Turkish despotism of which so many of them were
had been
the agents – & the participation in its spoils – resisted all
suggestions which would have limited & restrained their power by
giving more influence to the people, so that the final regulations

those whidh existed
