and if the late events in Greece have afflicted the friends
of that interesting country, the Committee in referring to
all they have done – & all they have suggested are convinced
that many evils might have been prevented & many
benefits have been conferred had more attention been paid
to their communications. One of the earliest & most liberal
friends of the Greek cause, Mr Gordon of Cairness has on several
occasions assisted favored the Committee with that information which
his local knowledge, enabled him to convey – and indeed,
an eagerness to assist their views which they remember
with pride and mention here with great satisfaction.
In May 1823 The Committee sent lost no time in despatching to Greece, several
printing presses, with sufficient types – lithographic
presses – mathematical instruments, maps & and
they have great satisfaction had delight at having been the instruments in means of
establishing newspapers at Missolonghi, Athens &
elsewhere – to at having in some sort re introduced one of the
most interesting & important branches of literation – into the old ancient
& venerable shrines of literation learning and at having through this
channel to have obtained some securities for good government
– some services of vexatious genuine information – & the many benefits
resulting from discussion & a free press.
