being hired of individuals, and being in many respects insufficient
for the purpose of effectual maritime war. The military
and naval members of the Committee have made occasions frequently
favored them with valuable reports, which reports have
been given to the Deputies forwarded to the Greek government – and which when
the assistance of those on anoccasion occasion when it was important that that
Government should receive some information on the laws laws of nations & the questions of neutrality might embarrass who
a rights, a distinguished member of the Committee, second
to none in his knowledge on these subjects, dedicated much
of his time to the preparation of a long & elaborate
communication, – whose clearness & precision must have
rendered it of no small value to those to whom it was
addressed with the strong recommendation of the Committee.
Colonel Stanhope returned from Greece in July 1824.
He had been unweariedly active in furthering every object
which could lead to the its emancipation: & while his attention
was primarily turned to the great purpose of subduing
the Turkish power, and securing Greece from its her barbarous
invaders he had been assiduously promoting the establishment
of schools – of hospitals – of printing-presses – of posts for
more regular communication intercourse (and it will hardly be believed
that the communication from the Ionian to the Seat
of Government, the only medium of communication with England & Europe a distance of only miles has frequently
