In December the Green Committee, in consequence
of communications from Lord Byron, and from other sources
imparting the unfortunate calamitous disposition existing in Greece
addressed a serious exhortation to the Greeks, which was
extensively circulated among the Primates, the kapitanoi Captains
(Kanisavoi) & the people urging on them the peremptory
necessity of union: & pourtraying the fatal inefficiencies of
those misunderstandings & divisions which had been such a
source of triumph to their enemies & of sorrow to their friends.
The Committee have reason to believe that this address produced
a salutary influence impression in Greece: It was seconded by the
prompt & active interference of Lord Byron & Col Stanhope
& but for the unfortunate death of the former & the unexpected
recall of the latter, the a new era of conciliation &
harmony might have been dawned upon the Morea.
On the arrival of the Greek Deputies a loan
was contracted for thro' Mess Loughnan Son & OBrien for
£800,000 & three members of two the Committee requested two of its members Mr Hume &
Mr Ellice were appointed to act as Commissioners in
of the public. Three other members Lord Byron, Col. Stanhope & Mr Gordon were appointed, were to watch over its
conversion payment into the Treasury of the Greek government: – but
the removal of the two former prevented the views of the
