Agents in Greece to endeavor to obtain an immediate transfer into the hands of Trustees of
such parts of the national property as would ultimately provide for the progressive
repayment of the Loan, – & in the mean secure the remittal of
the dividend. The Committee, not more in the interest of the bondholders
than in the interest of Greece itself, did frequently & urgently call
the attention of the Greek government to the necessity of providing
for the regular payment of the interest on the bonds – The Committee
urged entreated that if not the whole – at least a part – even a few cargoes
of produce – any thing indeed which would be evidence of their intention to
fulfil their contracts should be dispatched to England – & they used
not only the moral argument – but the purely selfish argument to the
Greeks – for they told them that no more money would be found
unless early measures were taken to pay the interest on that which
was already due, – & that if this were done, any sums of money
which might be required for the salvation of Greece would be easily raised obtained. Such language was
not palatable to those to whom it was addressed, and it was became
subject of boast that the The Committee failed in their object of
obt securing the interest property of the creditors of Greece, – and if
it would have been well had they succeeded – well for the English
lenders & better for the Greek borrowers. It would have been well too
for the cause of freedom & of man. The other charge that Count
Palma brings forward against the Committee is something like a charge of embezzlement
