remitted to the Greek Deputation in London, since they told me in
Greece that not even the half had reached them." The money which the
Quakers raised & which amounted to about £10,000 was distributed by
themselves in purs works of benevolence – in assistance rendered to
& captive Greeks – and is the education of a number of many
men Grecian youths. The Quakers are not – we will tell the Count
not accustomed to spend employ their resources blindly or foolishly. Some
public subscriptions certainly were paid over to the Greek Deputation
– that of Calcutta for instance, which amounted to £2200, – & we
discovered on enquiry, to our surprize & sorow that only £1200
had been passed to the credit of the Greek government, & are which
note was attached to the entry 'Mr Orlando will privately account for
the remaining £1000.'
But we are enabled to give an outline of the manner in which
the funds of the Greek Committee have been appropriated, & we
are sure they have been honestly & economically – as we think
they have been judiciously applied
