– nor shall we on this occasion think it necessary to do much
more than to give a few specimens of the poetry of the
Servians as we have reason to believe the subject will be
treated more extensively hereafter.
Something has been done of late years
Till civilization has made considerable progress
among a nation the only branches parts of its literature which can possess an extended interest are the historical, and the popular (or poetical)
literature are the only branches. Of the two Sclavonic idioms
most extensively employed the Russian till the hand of
Alexander possessed no history of value or of authority till
the time of Karamzin whose work tho' not translated is
known to us thro' its French & German versions. Of the Polish
historians of Poland whose wrote in Latin, many are not
unfamiliar to the English student:- but the Polish
history of the Piast dynasty by Naruszewicz – that of
the Javellons by Tomaszewski; – & especially a
collection of historical records by Niemcevicz and
others which are now being published at Warsaw, remain yet
to be explored by those who will & will certainly reward
the labors of the explorer. Of the poets of Poland, the
Latin Lyrist, Casimir Sarbiewski has an European
