simple & flowing – men like but some of them the Asonante ballads
& romances improvisation of the Spaniards than any thing else which
presents itself to our mind. Their pastoral habits too –
their climate & their country are far more favorable to poetry song
than those th of the more northern Sclavonians. As they
have little intercourse with foreigners, so their poetry is
original & national. Insert The language As oriental character – & remarkably
resembling. But as their ballads resemble in their construction those
of the Spanish pronunciation, so the In many respects the Servian
ballads resemble those of the Spanish peninsula – & of are impressed
with the same oriental character. A Servian peasant
singing chanting to the tones of the Gusle (a miserable sort of stringed
Instrument) one of their hero-songs, is the very counterpart
of an Andalucian Romancero striking the cords of his
guitar at the termination of his asonant verse.
The epoch of Servian glory – if glory is identified with
extended sway – was the middle of the 14 Century. The hero of
Servian history is Dushan who was then the Tzar of Servia,
Albania, Bulgaria & Greece. Tradition has given to Dushan
the character of an enlightened legislator as well as a successful
Warrior – He died in 1356 & Servia has since been partitioned
between Austria the rulers of Vienna & Constantinople.
