Casimir. Lib. IV Od. ult.
(Nam que reoijs lisuina dulcius, Vc.)

Oh Liberty! where can thy pious find rest,
Those queen of brave and fetterless men,
If not in the land which those lovest the best,
The fields of Littavia and Casimir's reign?
Daughter of Wisdom, and mistress of Fortune,
Herald of peace to a long-wasted shore,
Whom the fearless Pole woos, a thousand fields courting;
Oh, sought with much danger, but purchased with more!

More stately than thrones – more sublime than
Sole nurse of a nation's unfading delight,
Oh, hover awhile of o'er thy favourite land,
And stay in mid ether thy chariot of light,
Where the proud Lithuduian, in golden arms gleaming,
Joins his kinsman in glory on Vistula's side;
Where crowds roll'd on crowds like the sea-waves are streaming,
And shadow the face of the land where they ride.

of which I chiefly speak
is his calculated thy veck!

Thou fled the stern sons of the North and of war;
And our fathers, who fought by the standards of Lech, Might prove their descendants by many a scar!
Sworn subjects to him whom the law bids us love;
Unpractis'd to envy, unskilled to betray;
Who prize our own kingdom all kingdoms above,
And own no disgrace but a conqueror's sway.

The bright torch of Virtue and Zeal never sheds
A lustre so pure, so unlikely to fade,
As when Freedom, unstinted, impartially sheds spreads
O'er prince and o'er people her fostering shade.
Then free from its mansion the high spirit glances,
Nor wastes its rich ardours to stolk's cold embrace;
Then glances, uncheck'd, on its quarry advances,
And shoots to the goal with a conqueror's pace.

Regilus altier – Ipsaque Majestate major – There is something fine in this play of
words; like Milton's "highly thy rage against the Highest."
