Thren X
My lovely Orszula, whither hast thou disappeared!
Whither hast thy fled, – to what region?
Whether thou didst to soar aloft abo beyond the havens
And art now numbered among the little little Angels
Whether thou art transfered to paradise? Whether to
the lands of the blessed? Whether the Choron
Wafts thee across the melancholy lake; and
Makes the drink waters of oblivion, that and
Thou know knoweth naught of my sorrow.
Whether thou having exchanged thy human form and virgin thoughts
Those the Thou has hast assumed the shape and the feathers of a nightingale
Or undergoes the cleansing power of purgatory if
If thy body left any shame f upon thy soul.
Or Art thou returned, whence thou camest
Before thou wast born to my grief?
Wherever thou art, if still thou existed art, compassionate me my sorrow
And if they canst not, in thy former shape
Pity me, in whatever way thou canst, and appear before me
Either as dream, either as a shadow, or fleeting vision!
